More About Renee

Renee has 20 years of extensive experience providing support to couples who are experiencing difficulties in their parenting, along with providing psychotherapy to children, teenagers and families

Renee completed her studies and training in Los Angeles, California, where she worked extensively with marginalized youth in inner-city schools, along with maintaining a private practice, where she worked with individuals, couples and families.

Renee draws primarily on psychodynamic, interpersonal, relational, Emotion-Focused (EFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) models of psychotherapy. She has worked for many years with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, loss, substance-abuse, eating disorders and self-harm.

Prior to becoming a therapist, Renee worked for many years with young children in a democratic learning environment that focused on healthy emotional and social development. Through this experience, she learned meaningful and authentic ways to support children in finding safe outlets for their big feelings and develop strong problem-solving skills that included helping them set their own boundaries and be respectful of others’ boundaries. She regularly incorporates and adapts this approach into her work with clients of all ages.

In Renee’s Words

“The best way out is always through.” - Robert Frost

I had been a client in my own therapy throughout my 20s and 30s.  This experience was transformative for me. During that time, I became very curious about what it was like to be a therapist. So, I decided to find out and become one. I’ve been a therapist now for 25 years. I love helping my clients become more open, authentic, vulnerable, and insightful. And I’m grateful to be in a profession that supports and encourages this same growth in us therapists.

Education

Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology

Relevant Facts

• Extensive experience working with young children and couples/individuals experiencing difficulties parenting

Irrelevant Facts

• Taught indoor cycling classes for 10 years, first in Los Angeles and then Toronto

• Can speak a little Spanish, Hebrew, and Japanese… but not at the same time!

Q&A

  • I utilize primarily psychodynamic, relational, trauma-informed, Emotion-Focused (EFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) models.  I’m passionate about helping clients go below the surface of their behavior, become curious about what they’re feeling and needing, and exploring more effective ways to get their needs met.

  • I did my training in California, where I lived for many years.  In that state, it’s very common for therapists to be trained in couples and family therapy and to view clients’ challenges with a systemic lens that focuses on their relationships and contexts they live in.   Being a couples and family therapist also provides the flexibility of being able to work all parts of a family.
