More About Aiwen

Aiwen has experience working with both individuals and couples, and tends towards an integrative approach that draws from a variety of therapeutic frameworks in order to best address the issues that clients bring into therapy. Her hope is to bring new understanding, compassion, and awareness to individuals and couples as they examine long-standing behavioural and interactional patterns that no longer serve them.

Aiwen is a former lawyer who practiced law for a number of years before recognizing and accepting her passion for helping and supporting clients in a deeper and more meaningful way through psychotherapy. She believes that our sense of fulfillment and purpose, and our ability to respond to life’s circumstances depend on our understanding and acceptance of ourselves, healthy and deep connections with others, and, if desired, a faith in something greater.

Overall, Aiwen works from a systems perspective. She seeks to understand her clients within their unique context. This means she takes into consideration not just a client’s personality traits, but also the family in which he or she was raised, the culture in which he or she grew up, any faith/spirituality, as well as major life experiences, and any other contributing factors. In all of her work, she endeavours to be trauma-informed and non-pathologizing, and to approach with compassion and curiosity.

In Aiwen’s Words

“Isn’t it funny how day to day nothing changes, but when we look back everything is different” - C.S. Lewis

This quote perfectly summarizes how therapy can feel at times. Change is hard and never seems to come quickly, and yet, everyday I witness the courage of my clients in facing themselves and honestly looking to change what has stopped working for them in their lives. It is truly some of the hardest work that anyone is called to do and I am humbled to be a witness to their progress.

Q&A

  • I have always been interested and fascinated by human behaviour and human relationships. As I progressed through undergrad as an Economics major and later worked as a lawyer for a number of years, I continued to be intrigued through an economic and legal lens by my clients - why did they find them selves in particular places of struggle and how were they able to face suffering in their lives with courage and resilience. As time passed, and clients came to me during some of the scariest and lowest moments in their lives while dealing with the stress of the legal system, I began to realize advocating for them as their lawyer never quite addressed the root causes of some of their issues. I longed to understand and help each person that I encountered more holistically and deeply. From there began my journey towards becoming a therapist both for individuals, as well as couples.

  • I have a background in family mediation and one thing I love about mediation is that both parties have the opportunity to share their side of the story so that an honest and sustainable compromise can be reached. In the early days of doing individual therapy, I immediately noticed that although I was able to support and validate my clients well, I was always hearing just one side of the events that transpired. I found myself wanting to know the other side of the story so that I could better help my clients see their own blind spots, hidden assumptions and unhelpful distortions. Couple therapy was the perfect arena to work with both parties as they endeavoured to do the work needed to better their relationship with each other.

I also find couple therapy, broadly speaking, to be an area of therapy that really explores interpersonal conflict and how to navigate it well. I am a big believer in embracing conflict as a unique opportunity between two people to gain deeper understanding and insight into each other and themselves. As humans, conflict is inevitable if we are to love and care for those that we live with and work with.
